Learning About Switching to an ENFit Feeding Tube

An ENFit tube is a new type of connection between your feeding tube and your feeding supplies. It's now being used commonly, worldwide. Learn more about it and how to transition to an ENFit tube.

What is an ENFit feeding tube?

An ENFit feeding tube has a new type of connection between the feeding tube and the feeding supplies.

ENFit has a twist-on safety connector. This means that the feeding tip can only go into the correct tube. The older, or legacy, connectors are a "push-in" model. With the old connector, it’s possible to make a mistake and force the feeding tip into the wrong tube, such as an intravenous (I.V.) tube.

The ENFit system is a new standard for feeding tube connectors. It's now being used commonly, worldwide. If you are using a different type of feeding tube system, talk with your doctor about using ENFit connectors and adapters. In the future, other types of feeding tube systems may no longer be available.

Why are healthcare providers switching over to the ENFit tube?

The switch to ENFit is being done for your safety. Putting your food into the wrong tube can be dangerous and even fatal. ENFit’s twist-on connector makes this impossible.

What can you do if your supplies don’t match the ENFit tube?

Contact your medical supply vendor and tell them that you’re switching over. You can get a reverse funnel adaptor to connect your legacy supplies to the ENFit tube. The tip of the legacy syringe fits into it. The adaptor lets you use some of the legacy items you already have until they’re gone.

Most feeding bags are already ENFit-compatible.

What if you have a low-profile tube?

Nothing changes with the tube inside your body. It’s still the same. The ENFit extension set connects to your button the same way your current tube does. But the connection points for your feeds or syringes are ENFit connections.
