When You're Deciding Where to Refer

Cancer Services
Cancer care is delivered through close collaboration among medical, surgical and radiation oncology specialists, ensuring treatment plans are tailored to each patient's diagnosis, goals and overall health.
Medical Oncology
Medical oncology services are available throughout the UMass Memorial Health system for patients with both common and rare cancers. Our specialists offer a broad range of treatments, including chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapies, CAR T-cell therapy and clinical trials when appropriate.
Surgical Oncology
Patients have access to specialized cancer surgery for a wide range of malignancies, including advanced and complex cases. When clinically appropriate, our surgeons utilize minimally invasive and robotic approaches that may reduce recovery time and support faster return to daily activities.
Radiation Oncology
We care for patients with common and complex cancers using advanced radiation therapies. Treatment plans are tailored to each patient's diagnosis, treatment goals and overall health, with a focus on delivering precise therapy while minimizing effects on surrounding healthy tissue.
Proton Therapy
Proton therapy delivers highly targeted radiation that helps protect healthy surrounding tissue, potentially reducing treatment-related side effects. Bringing this treatment to Central Massachusetts will expand access to leading-edge cancer care and reduce the need for patients to travel outside the region.

Specialized Programs and Treatments
CAR T-cell therapy and bispecific antibody therapy are advanced immunotherapies available at UMass Memorial for patients with certain relapsed or refractory cancers, particularly blood cancers. UMass Memorial's cellular therapy specialists work closely with referring oncologists to evaluate patients, manage treatment and coordinate follow-up care through a shared-care model, when appropriate.
The Comprehensive Breast Program provides coordinated care for patients with benign breast conditions, elevated breast cancer risk and breast cancer diagnoses. Services include breast imaging, risk assessment, genetic counseling, multidisciplinary treatment planning and survivorship support, creating a clear pathway from screening through long-term follow-up.
Genetic testing and counseling services help identify hereditary cancer risk and inform screening, prevention and treatment decisions. These services may be especially valuable for patients with strong family histories, early-onset cancers or potential eligibility for targeted therapies.
UMass Memorial Medical Center is home to the region's only stem cell transplant program and one of only five centers in New England offering unrelated donor transplantation. Accredited by the Foundation for the Accreditation of Cellular Therapy (FACT), the program has performed more than 1,400 transplants since 1994 for patients with leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma and other blood disorders.
We use nuclear medicine to both detect and treat certain cancers through a targeted approach known as theranostics. This combines specialized imaging with therapies that deliver radiation directly to cancer cells. It can benefit patients with prostate, thyroid, and liver cancers — particularly when more precise imaging or treatment is needed.
UMass Memorial Children's Medical Center is home to the region's only comprehensive pediatric hematology-oncology program, caring for children and young adults with cancer and blood disorders. Through membership in the Children's Oncology Group, patients have access to national treatment protocols, clinical trials and emerging therapies close to home.
Our Mohs surgery program treats common and complex skin cancers using techniques that maximize cancer removal while preserving healthy tissue. As a regional referral center, our double board-certified Mohs surgeons collaborate closely with medical, surgical and radiation oncology specialists when additional treatment or multidisciplinary care is needed.
Patients receive ongoing support after treatment, including surveillance planning, symptom management, wellness resources and coordination with primary care providers. The program helps patients transition from active treatment to long-term survivorship while maintaining continuity of care.
